Keynote: Instigating A Connected Curriculum

Gardner Campbell, Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Student Success at Virginia Commonwealth University  The word curriculum implies connection. Too often, however, students experience curriculum as merely a list of required courses. University structures and procedures, from registration to advising, from general education to majors, too often reinforce this sad experience.  Truly integrative learning can still happen, but more in spite of these structures and procedures than because of them. My talk is a modest proposal for another way to think about curriculum, one in which connections are not only learner-centered but learner-instigated, with special attention to so-called “general education.” Read More
