GSC Open Ed 2017-18

In conjunction with the USNH Open Education Initiative, GSC continues to offer professional development and grant opportunities for its faculty to explore and integrate open education into their courses.  

As part of this initiative we are pleased to share several professional development opportunities including the 2018 Academic Technology Institute (ATI)

  • Academic Technology Institute (ATI) 2018:
    USNH's 8th Annual Academic Technology Institute (ATI)
    Open Education: Pedagogy, Technology, and Advocacy
    @ the University of New Hampshire, May 30-31, 2018

    Faculty who are selected to attend will engage in foundational and elective workshops infusing Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy/Open Educational Practices, and Open Access Publishing with pedagogy techniques and technology tools.  Sessions will also focus on advocacy approaches to advance awareness and adoption of Open Education within USNH and beyond. 10-15 faculty from each of the 4 USNH institutions will be selected to participate.  (Granite State College, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, and the University of New Hampshire).  As part of the ATI program, faculty who are selected will be expected to complete a proposal and project focused on one or more of the Open Education focus areas: Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy/Open Educational Practices or Open Access Publishing during the next academic year. Each “Open Education Ambassador” receives a $2000 stipend.

  • A Night of Open Education with Dr. Karen Cangialosi presenting:
    "Open Education: Access, Agency and Connection"   3/20/18, 5:00-8:00 PM @GSC Concord        
    • Learn about open education, OER, open pedagogy and how this USNH initiative is driving down textbook costs, engaging students actively in the learning process and replacing "disposable" assignments with real-world activities at Granite State College and its sister institutions. Learn how your GSC colleagues have implemented OER and Open Pedagogy projects in their courses. And discover ways in which you can participate in professional development opportunities and re-imagine your course design.
    • Dr. Cangialosi  is a biology professor at Keene State College. She has spearheaded a movement to use OER in several Biology courses in her department. And for the past few semesters, she has incorporated methods of open pedagogy. As a Faculty Fellow, she is facilitating an Open Pedagogy Learning Community and helps to organize the KSC  Open Education speaker series.

  • Open Education Week: March 5-9, 2018:  " Open Education Week’s goal is to raise awareness about free and open educational opportunities that exist for everyone, everywhere, right now.  We want to highlight how open education can help people meet their goals in education, whether that’s to develop skills and knowledge for work, supporting formal studies, learning something new for personal interest, or looking for additional teaching resources.   • A Night of Open Ed with Dr. Robin DeRosa (3/16/17)  
    Open Education: Access and Engagement in Public Higher Ed  (Click to watch the recorded session.)

    In this presentation, Robin will introduce the basic definition of Open Educational Resources (OER) and explore some ways that faculty have been using OERs to drive down and even eliminate the cost of textbooks for students. She will cover the why and how of open licensing, and explain how Creative Commons licenses can be used by faculty and students to share educational materials and scholarship more freely. Robin will examine some of the data around textbook costs and the efficacy of OERs as they impact student success. She will also push past obvious cost-savings benefits to ask larger questions about how OERs, open licenses, and digital technologies that connect learners can be leveraged to develop open pedagogical practices that both empower learners to contribute to the knowledge commons and reinvigorate the mission of our public Higher Education institutions in New Hampshire. Robin is the Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Plymouth State University and she has been speaking on this topic in both the US and Canada over the past year.   • Academic Technology Institute 2017:

    In addition to the three-day event, participants (Open Ed Ambassadors) will commit to a year-long project incorporating open pedagogy or open educational resources into a GSC course to be offered between Fall 2017-Spring 2018. One day follow up events will be scheduled in the fall, winter and spring with the latter being an opportunity for faculty to showcase their projects. An evaluation of open education strategy will be incorporated into these courses to measure the impact of the project. The stipend for participating in the ATI is $2000.

  • GSC Open Ed Mini-Grants 2017
    Faculty are invited to apply for a mini-grant in which they will re-develop or create a new course that incorporates open education strategies, specifically open education resources or open pedagogy. Course development work must be completed no later than June 30, 2017 in conjunction with an instructional designer and the GSC librarian. Courses will be delivered between Summer 2017-Spring 2018 dependent on the course schedule. An evaluation will be incorporated into these courses to measure the impact of the project. The stipend for these re-development projects is $750 and $1000 for new developments (permission of Dean/Director required)
