Using Kaltura Capture Space to Record Lessons

Kaltura’s CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder enables easy video creation with automated publishing and interactive viewing within your LMS and Kaltura's MediaSpace video portal. CaptureSpace allows you to create audio podcasts, webcam video, and screen recordings. Video is the new power tool in your learning tool belt and Kaltura’s CaptureSpace can accelerate your students learning.

What you will need:

  • Computer/ Tablet with internet access

  • Access to the Kaltura multimedia tool

Directions: (From Canvas but applicable in other LMS’s)

  1. Enter Canvas and choose your course.

  2. Enter “My Media” from the left hand navigation menu.

  3. Click the blue “Add New” button on the top right.

  4. Select “CaptureSpace” (1st time use: install the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder)

  5. On the settings tab, be sure you have the correct camera and microphone, and screen recording quality selected

  6. Select the type of recording you would like to create, your recording options include:

    • Record the Screen and voice (use this if you have visuals to include, such as a powerpoint).

    • Record the Screen and a video (the video will be of you and will use your webcam).

    • Record only video

    • Record only voice

  7. Click the record button. When you are finished recording, click the end recording button and follow the prompts to save the video/ audio file.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Whenever possible use an external microphone.

  • Keep your recordings focused on a topic. (20 – 40 minutes)

  • Speak slowly and clearly and pause at the end of sentences.

  • Edit captions to ensure accessibility.

Possible uses: flipped classes, online course content, welcome messages, personal introductions, assignment instructions, simple demonstrations, make up lectures (snow days), screen recordings of answers to worked problems, or assignments (student can make their own screencast).

In-Video Lecture Quizzes

In-video lecture quizzes are one low stakes method of keeping students actively engaged in online instruction.

What you will need:

  • Laptop or desktop computer

  • Kaltura Media – embedded in Canvas, Moodle, or stand-alone

  • Lecture videos, pre-recorded

Directions: (From Canvas but applicable in other LMS’s):

  1. Enter Canvas and choose the desired course.

  2. Enter My Media and click the blue “Add New” button on the top right. Choose “Video Quiz.”

  3. Choose the prerecorded video lecture to enter a quiz and set guidelines in “Quiz Editor.”

  4. Play video, pause at point desired to enter quiz questions and answers. Repeat this process throughout the whole video.

  5. Upload quiz.

  6. To assign: go to “Assignments,” choose where to enter the quiz (add a new group, if necessary), click “+”, choose “More Options,” and enter the title of you quiz where it asks assignment name. Leave the HTML editor box blank.

  7. Choose the number of point value of the quiz.

  8. Choose the assignment group for Canvas organization. Under the pull down menu for submission type, choose “External Tool.”  Choose Kaltura Quiz / Gradebook from the Configure External Tool scroll.

  9. Assign the due date of the quiz.

Possible uses: flipped classes, online courses or “snow days.”
