Granite State College Night of Open Education

Granite State College Night of Open Education

March 27, 2018

On Tuesday, March 20th, Granite State College (GSC) faculty, staff, and administration gathered together to learn more about the USNH Open Education Initiative. Dr. Karen Cangialosi, Keene State College Biology Professor and Chair, delivered an introductory talk on "Open Education: Access, Agency and Connection" which touched on the three cornerstones of the movement: Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy, and Open Access. On her own campus, she has spearheaded a movement to use OER in several Biology courses in her department and as a Faculty Fellow, she is facilitating an Open Pedagogy Learning Community.

Karen emphasized open education as a strategy to address many of the current problems of higher education, and a much needed context for the adoption of technological tools in the classroom.  She discussed ways that Open Pedagogy provides transformational, collaborative, and critical learning opportunities for students and how OERs change students’ relationship with textbooks and knowledge acquisition, while saving on their overall university costs. See links to her presentation and recorded session below.

Later in the evening, several GSC ATI ‘17 Ambassadors presented their open education projects that they have been working on for the past year. These included Paula Lombardi’s open textbook, Instructional Methods, Strategies, Math and Technology to Meet the Needs of All Learners; Pat Erwin-Ploog’s redesigned, community and social media-based course, Living in a Digital Democracy; and Emily Gannon’s professional Community of Practice using social media.  You can learn more about all of projects on the GSC Open Ed projects page.

Participants also learned about the 8th Annual USNH Academic Technology Institute (ATI) 2018 which will be held at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, on May 30-31, 2018. The theme of this year’s Institute is USNH Open Education: Pedagogy, Technology, and Advocacy. Alexis Clifton will be joining us as the ATI 2018 Keynote Speaker. As Executive Director of SUNY OER Services, Alexis Clifton works with State University of New York (SUNY) institutions to establish, support, and expand their OER programs. She helps to identify each institution’s goals for open education, as well as to foster collaboration between campuses to expand options for effective open practices.  GSC faculty can apply here. Also see the ATI 2018 homepage for additional information.
